Gutter Maintenance and Repair: Regular Cleaning and Maintenance

Why do gutters need to be cleaned?

One of the most important functions of gutters is to direct water runoff. Inspecting and cleaning your gutters regularly ensures that water is properly flowing away from the building.

Gutters should be cleaned to prevent a number of issues, including:

  • Clogs
Debris can build up in gutters and create clogs that prevent water from flowing to the downspout. This can lead to roof leaks, basement water damage, mold growth, and foundation issues.

  • Pests
Gutters are a small, enclosed space that’s ideal for pests to breed in. Decaying leaves and organic debris can accumulate in gutters, providing a home for bugs, rodents, and disease-causing pathogens.

  • Overflowing
When gutters overflow, water can spill over the fascia board and cause it to rot. This can give pests direct access to your attic. Overflowing gutters can also damage landscaping near the building.

  • Plant growth
Dirt and debris from the roof can wash into gutters and provide a layer for seeds to grow in
Gutters should be cleaned at least twice a year, in the spring and fall. However, the frequency may vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Trees
If you have trees near your home, you may need to clean your gutters more often. For example, pine trees shed a lot of leaves and needles, so you may need to clean your gutters every three months.

  • Climate
Where you live and the climate in your area can affect how often you should clean your gutters.

  • Season
If leaves fall at different rates throughout the season, you may need to clean your gutters several times.

  • Pests
Gutters filled with water can create an environment for pests like mosquitoes and carpenter ants.

Cleaning your gutters in the spring allows rainfall to flow freely into the spouts, while cleaning in the fall removes dry leaves before winter.

Neglecting to clean your gutters can lead to costly repairs and damage to your home, including your foundation, landscaping, wood, brick, interior walls, and ceilings.

How to Check for Proper Drainage

  1. During a rainstorm, watch your gutters.
  2. Water should flow through downspouts, not over the sides.
  3. Check for standing water in gutters after rain stops.
  4. Make sure water from downspouts goes away from the house.
