Decks: Building standards

*Treated lumber will be used for the substructure with all decking types.

Cedar wood is a popular decking thanks to its rich, attractive colouring and its natural resistant properties.  Due to the naturally occurring resin within the boards cedar is rot-resistant.

Standard board size: 5/4 x 6, actual size is about 1″ thick by 5.5″ wide, and coming in lengths from 8ft to 24ft with (8,10,12,16, 20, 24)

Cost: Cedar wood is more costly than treated lumber but less expensive than composite decking options.

Life span: 25-30 years

Cedar is less maintenance dependent than treated lumber but does still require regular maintenance.

Maintenance:

Cedar wood has a natural attractive colouring and does not need to be stained or sealed.  It will fade to a weathered grey tone overtime. Many home owners choose to stain/seal to bring out the natural wood tones and ward off greying.

Sweep/Remove debri regularly.

Do not pressure wash- cedar is a soft wood and can be damaged by pressure washing.

Clean thoroughly using a cedar deck cleaning solution and deck brush yearly.

Once stained/sealed you will need to maintain the stain/seal by re-applying every 2-3 years.
