Several weather-related events can cause significant damage to homes. The most common are the following with the most common we encounter in red.
-
Flooding – From heavy rain, storm surges, or overflowing rivers; can damage foundations, walls, flooring, and electrical systems.
-
Hurricanes and Tropical Storms – High winds, heavy rain, and storm surges can destroy roofs, windows, and entire structures.
-
Tornadoes – Extremely strong winds can tear off roofs, collapse walls, or completely destroy homes. Flying debris also causes major damage as well as falling trees.
-
Hailstorms – Large hail can break windows, damage roofs, siding, gutters, anything on the exterior of the home including vehicles.
-
Wildfires (caused or worsened by dry weather) – Can completely destroy homes and infrastructure in affected areas.
-
Snow and Ice Storms – Can cause roof collapse from heavy accumulation, burst pipes, and damage from fallen trees or power lines. Ice dams are the most common we will see and this can cause extreme damage to the eave areas of roofs and even inside the home.
-
Lightning – Can cause fires or electrical surges that damage appliances and wiring.
-
Strong Winds (non-tornado) – Including derechos and microbursts, can cause roof and siding damage or topple trees onto homes.
-
Landslides/Mudslides – Often triggered by heavy rain, these can destroy foundations or sweep homes away.
