Storm Damage Insurance Claim Process Overview
About Lesson

Step 1: Assess the Damage

The first step is to assess the damage to the roof. This can be done by knocking on doors and asking homeowners if they would like a free inspection. When inspecting the roof, look for signs of damage caused by hail, wind, or other storms. Some common signs of damage include:

  • Missing shingles
  • Damaged shingles
  • Leaks
  • Warped or dented roofing materials
  • Soft Metal Damage (Gutters, vents, vehicles, etc)

If you find any signs of damage, be sure to document them with photos or videos. This documentation will be helpful when filing the insurance claim and with showing the homeowner the damage.

Step 2: Obtain Insurance Authorization

Once you have assessed the damage, you will need to obtain insurance authorization from the homeowner. This authorization will allows Avalon to deal directly with insurance company and work on customers behalf.

Step 3: File the Insurance Claim

Once you have obtained insurance authorization, you will need to file the insurance claim with the homeowner. Ask the homeowner which insurance they use and use Google to find a claims phone number Simple google the customers insurance company name followed by “claims” You can call the insurance company or submit the claim online. The insurance company will then provide a claims number and schedule an adjusters meeting.

Step 4: Wait for the Adjuster’s Meeting

Ask the customer to call Avalon as soon as they learn of the adjusters meeting so we can put in on our calendar. It is the job of the sales rep to stay on top of their insurance customers to make sure we go out for the adjusters meeting.

Step 5: Sales Reps attend the adjusters meeting

As soon as the adjuster’s visit has been scheduled, the customer should call Avalon Roofing and schedule a visit from a roofing expert. The roofing expert will be able to point out any damage that the adjuster may have missed. This will help to ensure that the homeowner receives the full amount of their claim. The roofing expert is one of our sale reps.  In the case that a canvassing team member got the insurance authorization, we will send a sales rep and the sales rep and canvasser will both be put on the sold job as sales reps.

Step 6: Plan the New Roof Installation

Once the adjuster’s report has been filed, we wait for the insurance estimate to come back to see how much money is covered. The sales rep will then basically do a demo for the customers to see exactly what they want based on how much money they have to spend. The customer can pay out of pocket for anything the insurance company doesn’t cover. This is an opportunity to upsell customers.

Step 7: Collect the Deductible and First Insurance Payment

Once the plan for the new roof has been finalized, the homeowner will need to pay the deductible and the first insurance payment. Avalon Roofing will then begin the installation process.

Step 8: Submit the Final Documentation to the Insurance Company

Once the new roof has been installed, Avalon Roofing will submit the final documentation to the insurance company. The insurance company will then issue the remaining check for the cost of the roof.

Conclusion

Following these steps will help you to ensure that the storm damage roof replacement process goes smoothly for the homeowner. By being professional and knowledgeable, you can help to ensure that the homeowner receives the full amount of their claim and that they are satisfied with the new roof.

Additional Tips

  • Be sure to dress professionally and be respectful of the homeowner’s property.
  • Be prepared to answer any questions that the homeowner may have.
  • Be patient and understanding. The homeowner may be going through a stressful time.
  • Follow up with the homeowner after the claim has been filed to ensure that they are satisfied with the process and to make sure we stay in front of them every step of the way.
  • Insurance adjusters have been known to persuade customers away from roofing companies. This happens for many reasons, one reason being the insurance adjusters want to give the roofing jobs to their friends/associates, second they want the homeowner to get quotes from several companies and then the insurance company pays the lowest one, which ultimately just saves the insurance company money and is not beneficial to the customer.
