Stained or Yellow’d Windows
Caused by the seal being broken and gas escaping
Again window needs to be replaced, which will help with the energy bill
Ever feel a window that’s super cold or hot….. Then it’s not doing its job
Stained or yellowed windows are not just a cosmetic issue. They can impact your home’s aesthetics, energy efficiency, health, and the lifespan of the windows themselves, and in some cases, pose a risk of lead exposure depending on the type of window.
Potential Health Risks:
- Stained windows can harbor allergens like pollen, dust, mold, and mildew, which can worsen allergy and respiratory symptoms.
- Mold, in particular, can pose a serious health risk, potentially triggering asthma attacks and other respiratory problems.
- Dust and debris buildup on windowsills can also contribute to allergies and general discomfort, including headaches, itchy eyes, and nausea.
Attracting Pests:
- Insects, such as spiders and ants, can be attracted to the dirt and grime on windows, leading to infestations.
- Some pests can even cause damage to the window frame materials.
Material Degradation and Reduced Lifespan:
- Dirt, grime, pollutants, and hard water spots can cause etching, permanent stains, and discoloration on the glass over time.
- This can compromise the structural integrity of the windows and necessitate premature replacement.
- Specifically, uPVC window frames can yellow over time due to exposure to the elements.
- Wood tannins can also bleed through paint, causing yellow stains, especially when exposed to moisture.
Potential Lead Exposure (in Leadlight/Stained Glass):
- Lead is often present in leadlight and stained glass windows, and can pose a health risk if the windows deteriorate or are damaged, potentially causing lead exposure.
- While simply having these windows in your home is generally safe as long as they are intact and not disturbed, it’s wise to be cautious during renovations or if the windows are damaged.
