Fiberglass Mat
Most modern shingles start with a fiberglass mat that the asphalt coats. This is the strength of the shingles and keeps them from tearing. Not all shingles use fiberglass, and some will be paper or other products that are not as near as strong. If you can see the edges of the fiberglass or it is exposed on the roof (it will sparkle as it is tiny shards of glass), this roof requires attention as it has worn through the protective layer and waterproofing layer.
