Hail can cause significant damage to homes in several ways, depending on the size and intensity of the hailstones, as well as the construction and condition of the home. Here are the most common types of hail damage:
1. Roof Damage
-
Asphalt Shingles: Asphalt shingles can crack, bruise, or lose granules, which weakens their ability to protect against water. You typically will see indents and craters from hail. It may not show on the topside easily but it damages the shingle underneath. These marks are not to be confused with blisters as blisters are a sign of damage not covered under insurance(See diagram). In severe causes it will remove heavy granules and crack the topside of the shingles. In moderate causes it will crack the underside of the shingle. Over time with expansion and contraction these underside cracks will expand and cause the shingles to fail and pull apart. This will lead to moisture intrusion and damage to the home.
-
Tiles and Metal Roofs: Clay or concrete tiles may break; metal roofs can dent or warp. Both can lead to roof failure in the long term.
-
Leaks: Damage to the roof can lead to water infiltration, causing rot, mold, or interior water damage. Hail that is severe enough can lead to direct access points into the home for exterior elements. This can cause damage to wood, insulation, drywall, flooring, and anything in it’s path.
2. Gutter and Downspout Damage
-
Hail can dent, crack, or dislodge gutters and downspouts, leading to poor drainage and potential water damage to foundations or basements.
3. Siding Damage
-
Vinyl or aluminum siding can crack, chip, or get punctured.
-
Wood siding can splinter or become dented.
- Fascia can be dented and sometimes even dislodged from the home.
4. Window and Skylight Damage
-
Hail can shatter or crack glass windows, skylights, or storm doors.
-
Damaged seals or frames can lead to leaks and energy inefficiency.
5. HVAC Unit and Exterior Appliances
-
Outdoor air conditioning units can suffer from dented fins or damaged components, reducing efficiency or causing failure.
6. Paint and Trim Damage
-
Paint can chip or peel due to hail impacts, exposing materials underneath to weathering and decay.
7. Interior Damage
-
If hail breaches the roof or windows, water can enter the home, damaging ceilings, walls, flooring, and personal property.
8. Any Outdoor Items Can Be Damage
- Hail can damage almost anything people may put out. Everything from grills, fences, flag poles, outdoor lights, lawn furniture, and anything laying around.
