About Lesson
While Stucco is the most common type of cladding and can be found nationwide, it is most popular in the Southwest region of the United States because of its desert-like climate. In fact, 50-60% of houses in this region are made using stucco. * It is also commonly used in the states of Texas and Florida.
While Stucco can be found in Michigan (it is a viable option in almost any climate, it is less popular than other options. Michigan homes are much more likely to be clad in vinyl, fiber cement, wood, brick, stone veneer, aluminum, and composite:
- Fiber cement: A popular choice for Michigan homes because it’s resistant to mold, termites, hail, wind, and moisture, and it doesn’t get brittle in cold temperatures. It’s made from a mixture of wood pulp, cement, clay, and sand, and can be made to look like wood, stucco, or masonry. However, it’s expensive to install because it requires a lot of labor.
- Vinyl: A popular choice because it’s affordable, low maintenance, and resists moisture. It can last between 20 and 40 years with proper maintenance.
- Wood: A classic choice that can be painted or stained to match any aesthetic, but it requires regular maintenance to protect it from the elements, pests, and potential rot.
- Brick: A durable and classic choice that offers excellent insulation and is very low maintenance.
- Stone veneer: A lightweight option that provides the luxurious look of natural stone at a fraction of the cost.
- Aluminum: A lightweight, durable, and resistant to rust and corrosion.
- Composite: A blend of materials that offers enhanced durability and low maintenance.
