What is exterior cladding?
Cladding is a construction method that involves covering a building’s exterior with a material to provide weather resistance, thermal insulation, and improve appearance.
The type of cladding used in residential construction depends on a variety of factors, including the building’s architecture, climate, and design needs:
- Wood: A natural product that’s been used for years, but it can’t be painted dark colors that are currently trendy.
- Vinyl: A lightweight, inexpensive, and low-maintenance material that’s quick to install.
- Fiber cement: A moisture-resistant material that’s becoming more popular as an alternative to wood.
- Stone: A traditional, stately, and sophisticated material that comes in a variety of colors and is more durable than wood or vinyl. However, it can be expensive due to its weight and the resources required to construct it.
- Metal: A popular cladding for non-combustible buildings that can be mixed and matched with different types of panels.
- Brick: A traditional cladding material that’s less commonly used today.
- Stucco: A common cladding for wood-frame buildings.
- Exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS): A popular cladding for non-combustible buildings.
- Polyethylene fabric: A cladding material for steel frame structures.
- Vinyl fabric: A cladding material for steel frame structures
