The componets of a GAF Roofing System

1. Leak Barrier

  • A self-sticking membrane that helps protect against leaks caused by wind-driven rain and damaging ice dams.
  • Typically applied to eaves and rakes, in valleys, and around chimneys and skylights.

The GAF Golden Pledge Roof Warranty requires the installation of the WeatherWatch Ice & Water Leak BarrierThis self-sealing leak barrier is a key component of the GAF Lifetime Roofing System and helps protect roofs from ice dams and wind-driven rain.

 
 
The GAF Silver Pledge warranty requires the use of StormGuard ice and water shield with GAF shingles. StormGuard is a self-sealing protection that helps prevent ice dams and wind-driven rain from entering vulnerable areas of a roof.
 

2. Roof Deck Protection

  • An underlayment that provides a secondary layer of wind-driven rain protection between your shingles and roof deck

The GAF Golden Pledge Warranty requires the use of:

  • Deck-Armor™ Premium Breathable Roof Deck Protection
    A key part of the GAF Lifetime Roofing System, this product is designed to protect against wind-driven rain and trapped moisture. It’s breathable, slip-resistant, and can be used with asphaltic-shingle and some non-asphaltic systems.
    OR
  • GAF Tiger Paw  (which is the upgraded option)
    This product is designed to protect against the elements while allowing moisture to escape. It’s made with a polypropylene construction that resists moisture absorption and mold growth
     
    The GAF Silver Pledge Warranty requires the use of one of the following deck protections:
  • Deck-Armor™ Premium Breathable Roof Deck Protection
    A key part of the GAF Lifetime Roofing System, this product is designed to protect against wind-driven rain and trapped moisture. It’s breathable, strong, and has a slip-resistant surface.

     
  • FeltBuster® Synthetic Roofing Felt
    A value-priced upgrade to asphalt felts, this product provides long-lasting protection against wind-driven rain. It’s non-asphaltic and has a spunbound surface for increased traction.

     
  • Shingle-Mate® Roof Deck Protection
    This fiberglass-reinforced product is designed to protect against wind-driven rain infiltration and avoid wrinkling or buckling.
     

3. Starter Strips

  • Starter strips shingles have specially positioned sealant applied at the factory
  • Installed at the eaves and rakes to help reduce the risk of shingle blow-offs

Avalon uses:

 Pro‑Start® Starter Strip Shingles
Cost-effective starter strip shingles with properly-positioned adhesive help resist shingle blow-off.
 
This is whats used for both Golden Pledge and Silver Pledge Warranties.
 

4. Shingles

  • Asphalt shingles are the most popular shingle type in the U.S. because they’re affordable to buy, install, and maintain.
  • Made from a sturdy fiberglass base, coated with asphalt and tiny mineral granules

5. Accessories

6. Attic Ventilation

  • Balanced attic ventilation helps reduce damaging heat and moisture in your attic*
  • Helps reduce the risk of ice dam formation in the winter

We most commonly use Cobra® SnowCountry® Advanced Premium Exhaust Vent for Roof Ridge
Premium filtered ridge vent with 3″ (76 mm) ring shank nails allows heat/moisture to escape the attic. Available in 11.5″ (292 mm) & 9″ (229 mm) widths.

7. Ridge Cap Shingles

  • Installed on the hip and ridge areas of the roof to help provide additional protection
  • May have colors available to complement your chosen shingles

We most commonly use: Seal-A-Ridge® Ridge Cap Shingles

Cost-effective 12″ (305 mm) width ridge cap shingles that help protect hips and ridges against blow-off.
 
A common upgrade would be:

TimberTex® Premium Ridge Cap Shingles

Double-layer 12″ (305 mm) width ridge cap shingles with large exposure help add depth and dimension to your GAF shingle roof.

THE COMPONENT REQUIRMENTS OF A GAF GOLDEN PLEDGE:

To qualify for a GAF Golden Pledge warranty, a roof must include a GAF Lifetime shingle, along with at least five qualifying accessories which typically include: a leak barrier, roof deck protection, starter strip shingles, ridge cap shingles, and attic ventilation (like a Cobra vent from GAF) – all installed by a GAF Master Elite Contractor; essentially, a complete GAF roofing system with specific components meeting their standards. 

 
Key points about GAF Golden Pledge requirements:
  • Shingles: Must be a GAF Lifetime shingle. 
     
  • Accessories: Need at least five qualifying GAF accessories, including leak barrier, roof deck protection, starter strip, ridge cap, and ventilation. 
     
  • Installation: Installation must be performed by a GAF Master Elite Contractor.
To qualify for the GAF Silver Pledge Limited Warranty, a roofing system must meet the following requirements:
  • ShinglesGAF Lifetime Shingles or LayerLock-labeled shingles 
     
  • AccessoriesAt least four qualifying GAF accessories, such as a roof deck protection product, leak barrier product, or attic ventilation product 
     
  • InstallationBy a GAF Master Elite Contractor
